چکیده

The clinical histories of six patients with quadriceps contracture seen within the last five years have been analysed and a search has been made for a common cause. Additional information has also been sought from authors who have recently reported this condition, Hn#{232}vkovsk (1961), Fairbank and Barrett (1961), and Gammie, Taylor and Urich (1963), to whom we are greatly indebted for their help. Study of our six patients revealed that they had all had injections or infusions into the thigh soon after birth, four of them for serious illnesses. Upon inquiry it transpired that out of twenty-two patients observed by the previous authors six had been similarly treated. This report is concerned with the implications of this observation.

Injection-induced contracture of the quadriceps femoris muscle in children.

Contracture of the quadriceps femoris in children leads to limited knee flexion.1 Fairbank and Barret2 and Hnevkovsky3 believed the contracture was congenital or secondary to progressive idiopathic fibrosis of the vastus intermedius. Lloyd-Roberts and Thomas4 stipulated that multiple injections into the thigh might cause the contracture. Proximal release in the early stage and distal release in...

Use of adjunctive prednisolone in the management of a cat with bilateral quadriceps contracture following trauma

CASE SUMMARY A 6-month-old cat was successfully treated for bilateral quadriceps contracture. Conventional treatments including surgery, dynamic flexion apparatus and physical therapy along with analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs resulted in temporary clinical improvement that was relapsing. The initiation of supplementary corticosteroid treatment with prednisolone coincided w...

Electrical simulation in addition to passive stretch has a small effect on spasticity and contracture in children with cerebral palsy: a randomised within-participant controlled trial.

QUESTION Does electrical stimulation in addition to passive stretching reduce spasticity and contracture more than passive stretching alone in children with cerebral palsy? DESIGN Randomised within-participant controlled trial with concealed allocation, assessor blinding, and intention-to-treat analysis. PARTICIPANTS Eleven (one dropout) children with cerebral palsy and bilateral knee flexo...

Malignant hyperthermia in infancy and identification of novel RYR1 mutation.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) has been reported as non-existent in children less than 1 yr old, although several unconfirmed reports have been published. A case report of MH in a 6-month-old child is presented, with confirmation of MH susceptibility by in vitro contracture testing of quadriceps muscle at 13 yr old. Genetic analysis revealed a novel RYR1 mutation that substitutes arginine 2452 for...

Percutaneous quadriceps tendon pie-crusting release of extension contracture of the knee.

To release extension contracture of the knee, the authors used a minimally invasive technique: percutaneous quadriceps tendon pie-crusting release. Percutaneous pie-crusting release was performed using an 18-gauge needle to puncture the stiff fibrous band of the distal and lateral quadriceps tendon under maximum knee flexion. Quadriceps contracture was gradually released by multiple needle punc...
